Why Building an Interactive Course Platform Is 10x Harder Than You Think
(And What I Learned the Hard Way)
I’ve been heads-down building this course platform.
And man, a hard truth smacked me along the way. I jump into projects all the time, only to find they are way more complex than I thought.
Take this platform.
At first, I figured it’d just be about putting up some courses, no big deal.
Stack them up, watch them grow, boom—instant value!
Well, turns out, making a course platform is a whole different beast.
A lot of us don’t realize how tricky things can get when we start something new.
You have to rewire how you think about complexity.
And think about what challenges you are actually up for in the long run?
If you’re building something like an image upscaler, you’re locked in on refining that one tool.
But with a course platform? Every new course feels like a brand-new product.
Each course isn’t just another piece of the puzzle—it’s a whole new puzzle.
That means every course needs the same level of effort and quality as the first one.
Sure, it gets a little smoother once you know the process.
But don’t forget that since it’s an interactive platform, each course still comes with its own set of problem.
When you choose what to work on, always ask yourself what the day-to-day of maintaining it is going to look like and if you’re ready for that.
And make sure you’re focused on one product, not creating a bunch of smaller ones.
While working on Hourandcode, every new course I feel like I’m working on a brand new feature. It comes with the same level of complexity.
And I think this is a problem.
Essentially that crank up the difficulty level.
